Sasan Gir, also known simply as Gir National Park, is one of India’s most celebrated wildlife destinations, located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat. It is the only natural habitat of the Asiatic Lions in the world, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Established in 1965, the sanctuary covers an area of about 1,412 square kilometers of rugged hills, dry deciduous forests, and grasslands that provide shelter to a diverse range of flora and fauna.
Apart from the majestic lions, Sasan Gir is home to leopards, sambar deer, spotted deer (chital), nilgai, wild boar, and over 300 species of birds including the crested serpent eagle and paradise flycatcher. The park also features scenic spots like Kamleshwar Dam, a great place for crocodile sightings, and Kankai Mata Temple, a spiritual site amidst the forest.
The best way to explore the park is through an open jeep safari, offering an exciting chance to spot lions in their natural habitat. The nearby Interpretation Zone at Devalia provides a mini safari experience, ideal for families and those short on time.
