Day 1: Airport – Dambulla

  • Arrival
  • sightseeing

Upon arrival at Colombo International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by an airport representative and your designated guide from Beyond Yatra. After completing all airport formalities, you will be escorted to your air-conditioned vehicle for a scenic drive to Dambulla.

Your journey begins with a visit to the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This sacred temple complex consists of five caves that house 157 statues of Lord Buddha, along with intricate paintings covering the ceilings and walls. Dating back to the 1st century BC, the caves reflect the rich artistry and craftsmanship of ancient Sri Lanka. The temple has been a continuous place of worship for over 22 centuries and still radiates an aura of peace and spirituality.

Later, proceed to the world-renowned Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as the Lion Rock or Sinhagiri. Rising almost 200 meters above the plains, Sigiriya was transformed into a royal citadel by King Kasyapa (477–495 AD). The fortress showcases advanced architectural and hydraulic engineering techniques, evident in its beautiful water gardens and ingenious irrigation systems that continue to amaze experts. As you ascend the rock via steep stairways, you will encounter the famous frescoes of celestial maidens, considered masterpieces of ancient Sri Lankan art. From the summit, breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes reward your climb.

Day 2: Dambulla – Kandy

  • SpiceGarden
  • KandyTemple

After breakfast at the hotel, begin your journey to the hill capital of Kandy, a city renowned for its rich culture, history, and scenic charm. On the way, stop at a Spice and Herbal Garden in Matale, where you will discover how Sri Lanka’s world-famous spices—such as cloves, pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and saffron—are cultivated in their natural surroundings, along with insights into their traditional medicinal uses and daily applications. Continue with a visit to the colorful Sri Muthumariamman Kovil, a striking Hindu temple noted for its vibrant Dravidian-style architecture and deep significance in the Tamil community. Upon arrival in Kandy, embark on a city tour featuring Upper Lake Drive with panoramic views of the tranquil Kandy Lake, the bustling Market Crafts Centre filled with traditional handicrafts and souvenirs, and the Gem Museum, which showcases Sri Lanka’s renowned precious stones. Later, explore the magnificent Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, spread over 147 acres and dating back to 1374, where over 5,000 species of plants, rare orchids, medicinal herbs, and the iconic Double Coconut Palm create a breathtaking natural display. In the evening, you may opt to witness the Kandy Cultural Show (subject to availability), an energetic performance of Kandyan dance, drumming, and fire walking that highlights the island’s artistic heritage. Conclude the day with a visit to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in 1595, which enshrines the revered tooth relic of Lord Buddha and stands as the spiritual and cultural heart of Kandy.

Day 3: Kandy – Nuwara Eliya

  • Citytour
  • Temple

After breakfast at the hotel, set out towards the cool highlands of Nuwara Eliya, with its misty landscapes and colonial charm. En route, visit the Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple in Ramboda, a sacred site steeped in the legends of the Ramayana. It is believed that Hanuman searched for Sita in the jungles surrounding the temple, and nearby lies the mythical ‘Sita Tear Pond,’ said to have formed from her sorrow. The temple is home to a towering 40-foot granite statue of Lord Hanuman, while the Ramboda hills are believed to have once sheltered the armies of Lord Rama during their battle against Ravana. Continue the journey with a stop at the Seetha Amman Temple, located beside a stream where Sitadevi is said to have bathed during her stay at Ashok Vatika. This temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman, stands on a site where ancient idols were discovered and is surrounded by intriguing footprints believed to be those of Hanuman, varying in size to signify his ability to transform at will. On arrival in Nuwara Eliya—fondly known as “Little England” for its colonial heritage—explore the charming town that once served as a favorite holiday retreat of the British. Stroll through streets lined with quaint cottages, elegant villas, and stately mansions, capture a memory at the old red-bricked post office with a postcard to send home, and unwind amidst the scenic beauty of Queen Victoria Park and the serene shores of Lake Gregory.

Day 4: Nuwara Eliya – Bentota

  • Localsightseeing
  • LeisureDay

After breakfast at the hotel, leave the misty highlands of Nuwara Eliya and journey down to the golden southern coast of Sri Lanka. Upon arrival in Bentota, check in to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. You may choose to simply relax by the beach, enjoy the facilities of your resort, or take in the tranquil coastal atmosphere. In the evening, relish a delightful dinner before settling in for an overnight stay at your Bentota hotel.

Day 5: Bentota

  • Sightseeing

After breakfast at the hotel, begin your day with a visit to the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, founded by Dudley Perera in 1988. This inspiring initiative is dedicated to protecting Sri Lanka’s endangered sea turtles by safeguarding nesting sites, rescuing eggs, and nurturing hatchlings until they are ready to be released into the ocean. At the hatchery, you will witness how eggs are carefully protected from predators, learn about the unique “head-starting” process where young turtles are nurtured before release, and gain a deeper understanding of the threats these gentle creatures face in the wild. Every nest, egg, and hatchling plays a vital role in ensuring the survival of the species, making this experience both educational and heartwarming.

Later, continue to Balapitiya for a serene boat safari along the Madu River, a journey that offers a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s timeless natural beauty and rural life. As you cruise past mangrove forests and small islets, you may spot traditional fishing practices, cinnamon cultivation, and demonstrations of coir rope making. Along the way, admire the 200-year-old temple nestled on one of the islets, watch for colorful butterflies, water lilies, and perhaps even some of the 46 bird species—14 of them aquatic—that inhabit the area. This peaceful ride through winding waterways and lush greenery provides an unforgettable connection with nature before you return to Bentota for the evening.

Day 6: Bentota – Colombo

  • Sightseeing
  • Colombo

After breakfast at the hotel, depart from Bentota and proceed to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s bustling commercial capital that blends modern vibrance with colonial charm. Begin your city tour with a drive through busy commercial districts and the leafy residential quarters of Cinnamon Gardens. Visit Fort, the former British administrative center and military garrison, before heading to Sea Street—the historic goldsmiths’ quarter in Pettah. Explore the lively Pettah Bazaar, stop by a Hindu temple with intricate stone carvings, and admire the Dutch Church of Wolfendhal, dating back to 1749. Other highlights include the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), a replica of the iconic Aukana Buddha, and the Independence Square, a symbol of Sri Lanka’s freedom.

In the evening, enjoy shopping in Colombo, which offers a mix of modern malls, boutique stores, and lively markets. Stroll along Galle Face Green, the city’s largest open-air promenade overlooking the Indian Ocean, where both locals and tourists gather to relax. For shopping enthusiasts, Colombo presents endless options—from Cotton Collection, House of Fashion, Beverly Street, and Odel (the island’s largest department store), to the bargain markets of Pettah, as well as upscale destinations such as Noritake, Barefoot, Laksala, One Galle Face, and Colombo City Center. Whether you’re looking for fashionable clothing, souvenirs, or premium handicrafts, Colombo’s vibrant shopping scene offers something for everyone.
